{"id":803,"date":"2017-10-09T07:00:49","date_gmt":"2017-10-09T11:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/groundbasedspacematters.com\/?p=803"},"modified":"2017-10-08T20:07:56","modified_gmt":"2017-10-09T00:07:56","slug":"softly-softly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/groundbasedspacematters.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/09\/softly-softly\/","title":{"rendered":"Softly, Softly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On October 4, 2017, the FAA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpo.gov\/fdsys\/pkg\/FR-2017-10-04\/pdf\/2017-21092.pdf\"><strong>issued new regulations<\/strong><\/a> for noise certification standards on certain airplanes.\u00a0 They become effective November 3, 2017.\u00a0 Certification standards apply to the design and manufacture of an aircraft.\u00a0 Operational rules apply to its operation.\u00a0 Specifically, the new rules adopt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a new noise standard for newly certificated subsonic jet airplanes and subsonic transport category large airplanes. By lowering the noise limit, this standard requires quieter designs and encourages manufacturers to adopt the latest available noise reduction technology into their aircraft designs. This rulemaking adopts new noise certification standards for airplanes certificated in the United States (known as Stage 5) that are equivalent to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 16, Volume I standard known as Chapter 14.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These new rules <a href=\"https:\/\/groundbasedspacematters.com\/index.php\/2016\/12\/09\/in-space-no-one-can-hear-the-noise-but-we-can-hear-it-on-the-ground\/\"><strong>will not apply to launch or reentry vehicles<\/strong><\/a> because the law does not treat launch and reentry vehicles as aircraft.\u00a0 Additionally, launch and reentry vehicles do not undergo certification.
